Some key questions to be answered by a CMDB quality audit are

  1. How do I know my CMDB is not missing relevant CI's?
  2. How do I know that all Key attributes for my CI's are available to the consuming processes like
    • Contract management
    • License management
    • Incident, problem and change management
    • Lifecycle management
    • etc
  3. How do I know if the required CI relations are available for my CI's
  4. How do I know if the information for a CI is overall consistent
  5. How can I setup automated controls in order to always have a good understanding of my CMDB quality issues and ensure that a process is in place to have CMDB defects fixed by the required personell.


My CMDB quality audit will provide you with all the answers to the above questions.


How will this work in practice?

  • We will start off with some intake interviews with the major stakeholders and involved parties (first 8 hours will be free of charge).
  • We draft up a contract for the work ahead and I will sign a non-disclosure agreement with you due to data confidentiallity.
  • Depending on the options to deliver your CMDB related data to me, we will select a way of providing me with that data. The data co
    • Preferred option is that I can have secure networking connectivity to your network and your ITSM Solution, and we have some shared storage where relevant data for the analysis can be stored.
    • Alternatively, there may be other ways of sharing data with me, depending on your capabilities
  • I will receive a couple of essential contact points (managers or team leads) I can contact for providing me with the relevant data
  • I will Aggregate all data in a dedicated database that I will use to build automated Logic, to validate the data that has been provided
    • This database will contain all the logic and will also contain all found CMDB related quality issues that can then be reported.
  • The defects will then be shared with you organisation, and validated if my findings are correct.


As a Result you have fact based information informing you about your CMDB quality and the measures to be taken to structurally improve these.

Normally the follow up after the first audit should proceed with the next steps (which I can also do for you)

  • Per CI class the Desired State in terms of quality standards will be detailed out.
  • All required Desired state and Compliance audits will be created and configured in ServiceNow
  • Dashboards to manage the CMDB defects will be setup in ServiceNow and staff involved will be instructed how to remediate the defects


Finally you will now know your CMDB quality based upon facts and policies, and you will have a controlled process in place to have CMDB defect fixed and maintain a high quality CMDB.
